Playa del Carmen is the third-largest city in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, and is situated on the East Coast of the Yucatán Peninsula right across from Cozumel. The city ranks up there with Tulum as one of the Mexican Riviera's trendiest cities.

Sitting just a 45-minute ferry ride from the lee side of Cozumel, Playa de Carmen's beaches are jammed with Europeans, American tourists in Hawaiian shirts, Russians, and attractive locals. The waters aren’t nearly as clear as up north in Cancún or across the way in Cozumel, and the beaches aren't anything like the champagne-powder-perfect ones found south in Tulum, but Playa (as it is known locally) is still a place you won't forget anytime soon after you visit.
Cozumel Scuba School arranges regular outings with students, divemasters, and staff instructors to go shopping, have some local cuisine, and just enjoy a day (or night) out. We also have to go through Playa to get to Cozumel (if you take a ferry), or if we want to head south towards other interesting locations on the Yucatán Peninsula.
Incidentally, the peninsula separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea, which encompasses the Mexican states of Yucatan, Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Tabasco, as well as, portions of Belize and Guatemala. In fact, you can take a bus down to Belize to enjoy the diving there too, though nothing (and we mean NOTHING) beats the many wonderful dives in Cozumel.
On the Caribbean, Mexico's Riviera Maya "resort strip" is bookended by two very popular destinations: Cancún, with its high-rise hotels and nightlife, and, down the coast, quieter but trendy and expensive Tulum. The former is a bit more dangerous if you stay out past your bedtime and wander the streets alone, whereas the latter smells strangely like 1960s San Fransisco petiole or the parking lot after a Grateful Dead concert.
